EDM:  How old were you when you first started riding?
KG:  I was 15 when I got my first motorbike.
EDM:  Really, so you were quite old?
KG: Yeah and I got an 85 for my first motorbike. My dad didn’t want to buy me a new motorbike, he got me an old second hand one. He didn’t know if it was just a phase I was going through.
EDM:  Really did he ride?
KG: No he didn’t.
EDM:  So what got you into riding?
KG:   I tried riding on a friends bike one time and from there the bug bite me… I just wanted to ride I don’t know and like every time I was around bikes I just wanted to get involved.  And so I got my 85 and I rode every now and again then when I was 16 my dad got me a 125 then I did my first race. It was a hare scramble I did on the 125… then I went from one hare scramble to the next and just progressed at that. Then I meet up with Clayton Enslin, who was the South African Champion at the time and then I got hooked up with him
EDM:  A hare scramble champion? Or GNCC?
KG:  He was National champion… and he had a riding school so then I started going to his riding school then I got my first brand new Yamaha. The riding school helped me with training and after I went to the riding school I made a decision that that’s what I wanted to do I want to become the best in the world. When I was 17 I did my first full season and I came 3rd in the championship .
EDM:  On your 125?
KG: Yeah on my 125 and then when I was 18 I won the 125 South African National Championship and the regional championship 125 off road.
EDM:  You’re a little bit of a stud then huh?
KG: Yeah I was quite happy with that.
EDM:  Is there money in South Africa racing? Can you actually make a living as a racer there?
KG: No not really, unless your big like top level.
EDM:  And you were racing in what class?
KG: I won 125 class then................................................Continued
